My name is Dave Whalen and I used to have an awful marriage.
For 18 years I was trapped in what seemed like a terrible marriage that was unescapable. When my wife and I first got married, we had committed that divorce was not an option, but as our children grew up and were about to leave the house, we figured out that we needed help or we would be destined to be room mates. We went through biblical counseling, and now our marriage is awesome. We even both got certified through the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, a process which took a little over two years and cost over $1,000.
I have had the privilege of discipling several married couples and walking them through their troubles - troubles with adultery, communication, biblical marriage roles, and an array of other problems which plague modern marriages.
Here is what I've learned through all of it: you, as a Christian, are competent to mentor other Christians. You don't need years of seminary training or the expense of formal certification. You need to be trained how to come alongside people in specific ways that relate to the problems they are having.
Once you understand what the Bible says about particular problems people face in this life, you will be unlimited in your potential to come alongside hurting marriages and help them through it. Put posture before process, then teach a couple to trace their recurring fight, the trigger, the response, the escalation, and catch it in real time before it blows up.
Week 8 - Parenting As a Team
Help two parents who disagree function as one, shepherd a child's heart instead of only managing behavior, and protect the marriage their parenting is supposed to rest on.
Week 9 - Family Finances
Get underneath the money fight to the heart it exposes, and lead a couple from serving money to stewarding it with unity and contentment.
Week 10 - Intimacy and Sexual Issues
